Tempus Argenti: Srebrenica celebrates with the Bosnian Presidia
Before the 1990s, Srebrenica was a lively town in eastern Bosnia. Its spa facilities brought tourists and it was a cultural center for the surrounding area. The theater welcomed artists from around Yugoslavia with their performances. Then the civil war and genocide of 1995 brought it all to an end and devastated entire communities.

Slowly, Srebrenica has gradually recovered and is now increasingly showing signs of re-establishing its cultural traditions. Last month, for example, a three day event with cultural initiatives was organized. On March 23, 24 and 25 the town hosted theater performances, taste workshops and concerts during which young local artists alternated with internationally such as Luca Murino of the Mau Mau.

In the first two days of the event, Slow Food Goražde organized taste workshops to present local gastronomic traditions to young people and adults. Erna Subasić, the young convivium leader who was keen to promote this initiative, explained why: “We want to bring young people back into contact with the land. People feel possessive about the land in Bosnia but we can no longer distinguish a homemade apple juice from an industrial one. Food is an essential element in regaining a healthy relationship with the local area and our identity”.

In response to Slow Food Goražde’s invitation, small producers from the Slow Food Pozegaca Plum Slatko Presidium and the Sack Cheese Presidium, together with the food community of Poljak bean producers from Trebinje, talked about their work and background to children at local schools and presented their products for tasting. This sensory experience helped young people to appreciate the value of artisan methods and traditions in food production.

The initiative was strongly supported by Roberta Biagiarelli of Italian Cooperation, and was one of the initiatives planned to celebrate the conclusion of the pilot project in support of social and cultural development in Bosnia Herzegovina. The main objective of this project was to revive cultural and social activities in the Srebrenica and Bratunac areas.
The three-day event concluded a process of cultural revival that has lasted several years, in the hope that these enchanted valleys do not fall silent again.
